Effective field theories are generic low energy expansions of physical processes for which a more fundamental, higher energy description is unknown or unsolvable. They rely on theoretical ingredients such as symmetry and renormalization group analysis. In this talk I discuss a few use cases of effective field theory for hadronic molecules, where QCD is not analytically solvable owing to asymptotic freedom, and the relation of this type of formulation with phenomenological approaches.
