HOW TO ARRIVE
Salamanca is a small city located 200 km to the west of Madrid. They are connected through a modern highway so you may use a rental car easily from Madrid Airport (Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas). It is recommended to choose the toll motorway AP-6 to avoid the long and winding national road.
However, there are more options to reach Salamanca through public transport:
Bus from Madrid Airport: there is a direct bus connection MAD Airport – Salamanca, run by Avanza Bus. At the web site you can check the timetable and purchase the tickets. The cost is around 30 € one-way and 55 € return trips. There are two bus stops at the T1 and T4 terminals which are a bit tricky to find. See instructions here for T1 and here for T4. The average time for the trip is 2 hours 45 minutes. The bus station in Salamanca is located just 10 minutes’ walk from the school venue.
Bus from Madrid downtown: Avanza Bus also provides more frequent bus connections between Madrid South Station “Méndez Álvaro” and Salamanca. This bus station can be reached:
- From Madrid Airport T4: by Cercanías (lines C1 and C10), and by underground metro (Line 8 + Line 6).
- From Madrid Airport T1, T2, T3: by underground metro (Line 8 + Line 6)
- From Atocha Train Station: by Cercanías (lines C1 and C10) and also by metro (Line 1 + Line 6)
Train: the only train connection to Salamanca departs from Madrid Chamartin Station. You can reach it:
- From Madrid Airport T4: by commuter trains "Cercanías" (lines C1 and C10), and by underground metro.
- From Madrid Airport T1, T2, T3: by underground metro.
- From Atocha Train Station: by commuter trains “Cercanías” and also by metro.
There are around 10 daily frequencies to and from Salamanca. Depending on the schedule, the journey can take from 1 hour 40 minutes to 3 hour 40 minutes. Once in Salamanca, at either the Bus or the Railway station, any point within the city can be reached (if necessary) by taxi at a maximum price of around 10 euros.
GETTING AROUND SALAMANCA
Salamanca is a small city: going from one side to the other does not take more than half an hour. All facilities, shops and services are located close to each other. Walking is the best way to reach any point. Most part of the city center is pedestrianised so that it is perfect to walk and explore by foot.
You can also move around Salamanca by bus. All the information about lines and frequencies can be found here (only in Spanish). There is also an app containing information called “Bus Urbanos Salamanca (BUS)”. Line 11 connects the train station to the conference venue. At the train station, cross the street and go to stop “Pº Estación 117”. The ticket is sold by the bus driver and a single trip costs 1.05 €. The final stop is “Pº Carmelitas 94”, a couple of minutes walking from the Hospedería Fonseca.
THE WEATHER IN SALAMANCA
Salamanca has a Mediterranean climate typical of Spain, although one that comprises extremes: the city experiences severely cold winters and very hot summers. September is a pleasant month, hot but not as hot as July and August. Daily temperature can reach 24°C but nights tend to be slightly cooler, so a cardigan or light jacket and closed shoes would be a good idea. Depending of the year there might be a small chance of heavy rain or thunderstorms.
