Description

The detection of gravitational waves represents an enormous experimental challenge due the ‘stiffness’ of spacetime. The innovations and evolution used in the LIGO suspended mass interferometers will be discussed, as well as the possible sources of gravitational waves and techniques being used to identify events and determine their characteristics. Finally, I will discuss future improvements to LIGO, as well as next generation gravitational wave experiments.
