DESCRIPTION:The detection of gravitational waves represents an enormous ex
 perimental challenge due the ‘stiffness’ of spacetime. The innovations
  and evolution used in the LIGO suspended mass interferometers will be dis
 cussed\, as well as the possible sources of gravitational waves and techni
 ques being used to identify events and determine their characteristics. Fi
 nally\, I will discuss future improvements to LIGO\, as well as next gener
