Descripción
Construction of model beyond the Standard Model is often guided by new fields and new symmetries which these fields possess. A usual procedure is to postulates a symmetry group and then adjust the field content to realize it. This problem can also be reversed: one can first fix the bSM field content, and then establish symmetries which it can support. This symmetry classification task can be rather difficult and needs mathematical tools beyond the blind search. I will describe a simple but powerful and universal method based on Smith normal forms which identifies all abelian symmetry groups possible within an arbitrary class of bSM models. I will illustrate this method with two examples from multi-Higgs-doublet models, and then outline how it helps solve the similar classification problem for non-abelian symmetry groups.
