DESCRIPTION:Construction of model beyond the Standard Model is often guide
d by new fields and new symmetries which these fields possess. A usual pro
cedure is to postulates a symmetry group and then adjust the field content
to realize it. This problem can also be reversed: one can first fix the b
SM field content\, and then establish symmetries which it can support. Thi
s symmetry classification task can be rather difficult and needs mathemati
cal tools beyond the blind search. I will describe a simple but powerful a
nd universal method based on Smith normal forms which identifies all abeli
an symmetry groups possible within an arbitrary class of bSM models. I wil
l illustrate this method with two examples from multi-Higgs-doublet models
\, and then outline how it helps solve the similar classification problem
 for non-abelian symmetry groups.\n\nhttps://indico.ific.uv.es/event/2023/
