Neutron energy measurements of (α, xn) reactions with MONSTER

The total neutron yield and neutron spectra from (α,xn) reactions are relevant for basic nuclear physics, nuclear technology, and applications$^1$. These fields rely on accurate experimental data of the nuclear reactions involved. Yet most of the available data were measured decades ago, are incomplete, or have large uncertainties. Updating these libraries for (α,xn) requires, among others, to carry out new experimental measurements$^2$.

The Measurement of Alpha Neutron Yields and spectra (MANY) collaboration is carrying out a broad program on the measurement of (α,xn) reactions for improving and expanding the existing databases. In the last years, a set of measurements on production yields, cross sections, and neutron and γ-ray energy spectra in the 27Al(α,xn)30P reaction$^3$ , at both Centro de Micro-Análisis de Materiales (CMAM)$^4$ and Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA)$^{5, 6}$ facilities, have been carried out.

We will present here the neutron energy spectra obtain from the analysis of the measurement of the 27Al(α,xn)30P reaction at the CNA HiSPANoS facility, and their comparison with previous data$^7$. During the experiment, six cells of the MOdular Neutron time-of-flight SpectromeTER (MONSTER)$^{8, 9, 10}$ were used to measure time of flight of neutrons emitted. Various unfolding techniques$^{11, 12}$ and Monte Carlo simulations$^{13}$ were used to obtain the experimental energy spectra and will be presented here. In addition, plans of future measurements of other reactions at CMAM and/or CNA will be discussed.
