The IRIS group has completed the development of MACACO III and MACACOp, two Compton cameras composed of LaBr3 crystals coupled to SiPM arrays. The systems have been fully characterized in laboratory and feature notable improvements compared to previous prototypes in parameters like the angular and temporal resolution. As systems for treatment monitoring in hadron therapy, tests have been carried out in beam facilities; at CNA (Sevilla, Spain) with 18 MeV protons impinging a graphite target, detecting 1 mm target steps, and also at the clinical gantry of the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice protontherapy centre (Krakow, Poland), detecting range variations of 2 mm. Neural Networks and veto approaches are being tested in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the systems are being assessed for radiotracer imaging. Tests conducted in La Fe Hospital (Valencia, Spain) have revealed MACACO III capability to image Derenzo-like phantoms filled with 18F-FDG and 131I-NaI radiotracers, improving the image quality attainable with clinically available gamma cameras; furthermore, for the first time with MACACO, images of metastatic lesions from patients treated with 131I-NaI after thyroid gland resection have been successfully obtained.
