Descripción
Hadron therapy is a cancer treatment technique based on the irradiation of tumours with protons or light ions. During treatment, beam particles excite nuclei in the patient and prompt gammas are emitted from nuclear de-excitation. Since the prompt gamma production distribution is closely correlated to the absorbed dose, their detection can be used for treatment delivery assessment. At IFIC, a prototype of a Compton telescope for this purpose is under development. I will introduce hadron therapy, discuss the applicability of Compton imaging systems for dose monitoring in this technique and talk about the results obtained so far with our prototype, our ongoing work and further steps.
