Recently a 6.8 sigma anomaly has been reported in the decays of excited 8Be nuclei, which can be resolved by postulating the existence of a new weakly-coupled, 17 MeV boson. I will discuss the experimental results; new physics explanations, focusing on dark forces and gauged B and L symmetries; and prospects for future experiments.
