Descripción
The origin of electroweak symmetry breaking (the mechanism responsible for the generation of mass for the fundamental particles) remains the most pressing unsolved question in particle physics today. In the simplest theory of electroweak symmetry breaking, a new scalar state exists called the Higgs boson, which has been the holy grail of experimental searches at particle accelerators for over a decade. In this colloquium, I shall discuss the significance of the terascale---an energy scale that will first be comprehensively studied at the Large Hadron Collider (which begins operations at the end of 2007)---and the connection of the terascale to electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for the Higgs boson.
