Descripción
On 4 July 2012, CERN announced a new scientific discovery and the world took notice. Images of the announcement were broadcast all around the world, it was front-page news everywhere, and almost half a million people tuned into the webcast of the scientific seminar. What happened to make Higgs bosons so exciting? There's no simple answer, but in this talk, James Gillies, who has led the CERN Communication office since 2003, will give his interpretation. It is a story based on the desire of one lab to engage its stakeholders openly, and it takes in everything from Black Holes to Hollywood.
