I will review the status of searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) - hypothetical particles with mass in the GeV range and tiny couplings to the Standard model, that may be capable of resolving the beyond-the-Standard-Model problems. I will briefly discuss their parameter space, highlighting the synergy between laboratory searches and cosmo/astro probes. Next, concentrating on laboratory searches, I will reveal the main challenges in the field, highlighting the role of uncertainties in phenomenology as well as the unifiedness and transparency of sensitivity calculations. Finally, I will address a "stereotype" that searches for LLPs cannot be efficient at main LHC experiments - ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb, by discussing several running and proposed algorithms, including the Downstream algorithm at LHCb.
