The discovery of a multitude of new hadronic resonances in recent decades has spurred renewed theoretical interest in the field of hadron spectroscopy. For some of these states there is significant tension between the measurement and the expectation from quark models. Lattice QCD has established itself as a useful tool to study the hadron spectrum in a model-agnostic way. Using a finite-volume quantisation condition, energy spectra of a QFT in a cubic box can be related to scattering amplitudes in the infinite volume. In this talk I will try to present a comprehensive overview of this methodology, from the discretisation of QCD on the lattice to the identification of pole singularities in the constrained amplitudes. At the end I will briefly discuss some recent progress in the realm of open-charm systems.
