Lattice QCD provides the most precise determinations of the strong coupling. In this talk I will give a critical review of these determinations and argue that only dedicated approaches have the potential to substantially decrease the uncertainty in alpha_s. Finally I will focus on one new idea: that a precise value for alpha_s can be obtained from the running coupling in the pure gauge theory. The connection with QCD is performed thanks to a low energy scale determined with heavy quarks.
