Abstract Microscopic folding potentials for negative and positive energies are presented and discussed. A common feature in both energy regimes is the fact that the same Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone g-matrix is used to model the in-medium nucleon-nucleon effective interaction. At negative energies the model enables the description of the single-particle structure of the nuclear ground state, while at positive energies one obtains an optical-model potential suitable for the study of nucleon scattering off nuclei. Special attention is given to the genuine off-shell structure of the interaction, resulting into nonlocal potentials which are treated without localization techniques. Results, limitations and scope of the approach shall be presented and discussed.
