The quest for dark matter

In standard cosmology, dark matter makes 85% of the matter in the universe, and is responsible for the formation of all the structures in the universe. Yet we know very little about its nature. After a brief historical introduction to the dark matter problem, I will review the current status of dark matter searches. I will focus in particular on the worldwide race to identify weakly interactive massive particles (WIMPs) with underground experiments, high-energy telescopes on earth and in space, and at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, highlighting the highly interdisciplinary nature of this research program, and the complementarity of the detection strategies. I will also discuss some possible alternatives to the WIMPs scenario, including the idea, recently put forward, that the gravitational wave detector LIGO has detected dark matter in the form of ~30 solar mass "primordial" black holes.
