The scalar strangeness content of the nucleon plays an important role in our understanding of the quark-flavor structure of the nucleon and in searches form dark matter candidates in direct detection experiments. In this talk, I will explain how one can predict such an important quantity, which is not accessible to experiment at this moment, from covariant chiral perturbation theory and recent lattice QCD simulations of the octet baryon masses.
