In the first part of my talk I will give a broad overview of statistical and machine learning methods and algorithms to take advantage of such data, which have been developed in recent years. In the second half I will focus on a more specific application (based on http://jn.physiology.org/content/early/2011/04/15/jn.00427.2010.abstract ; http://stat.columbia.edu/~liam/research/pubs/yashar-optcont.pdf ): optimal artificial control of spiking activity in neurons.
