The observation of cosmic rays (CR) with energy above 5*10**19eV poses a serious challenge to both astro- and particle physics. After a short review of the experimental situation, I discuss superheavy metastable particles and topological defects as CR sources and their signatures. Then, I show how the fragmentation spectra of hadrons can be obtained in the framework of SUSY-QCD. Finally, I discuss the lightest supersymmetric particle (neutralino, gluino) as possible CR primary.
