The High-Energy Physics and Worldwide LHC Computing Grid communities face significant challenges in comprehending their global data flows through the world's research and education networks. The Scientific Network Tags (Scitags) initiative strives to tackle this issue through several strategies and has created a set of tools, standards and proof-of-concept demonstrators that have shown the feasibility of these approaches at traffic rates of 1.2 Tbps. This talk describes the Scitags framework and delves into the technical aspects of the service underpinning the identification of flows whilst laying out the next steps in the effort to profit off of the increased visibility into the owner (community) and purpose (activity) of traffic anywhere in the network.
