In this seminar, we will review the concepts of symmetries and their breaking in Quantum Field Theory. These ideas are fundamental for constructing models of fundamental particles and their interactions. We will see that the gauge symmetry group of the Standard Model (SM) is not uniquely determined and, moreover, that it exhibits additional symmetries. We will discuss how these new symmetries can be used to explain neutrino masses and even to propose a new gauge principle that accounts for some of the ad hoc assumptions of the SM.
