DESCRIPTION:I will report on the status and initial performance of the ATL
 AS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider that has recently started opera
 tions. First results will be shown from colliding-beam operations at the e
 nd of 2009\, mainly at a centre-of-mass energy of 900 GeV. The real-life p
 erformance of the experiment will be compared with expectations. The prosp
 ects for early physics measurements from proton--proton collisions at a ce
 ntre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV will then be discussed\, including the potent
