Description

In the context of Quantum Field Theory, effective actions have become one of the most widespread tools for studying quantum corrections to classical theories introduced by the quantization process. While the explicit calculation of effective actions has proven to be highly nontrivial outside of specific setups, several perturbative approaches have been developed, allowing for a deeper understanding of nonclassical features of these systems like the Schwinger effect. One such method is the so-called heat kernel expansion, particularly useful for studying the 1-loop divergences and anomalies in the effective action. In this talk I will review some of the basic aspects of the 1-loop effective action definition and heat kernel methods as a whole, and additionally go over some recently developed resummation techniques for further refining the calculations associated with it.
