The dose delivered in high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR BT) treatments is high, ranging from 3 Gy to 20 Gy per fraction. Mistakes can lead to under or overdosage with the potential for clinical adverse effects. This aggravates the fact that currently there are no commercially or institutional available options to experimentally verify absorbed dose in this field. This is due in part to the fact that dose measurement is especially challenging in this field.
In this talk the procedure and the criteria for the development of a methodology to perform HDR BT dosimetry audits are described. The first part will briefly introduce the HDR BT technic and the dosimetry audits in the field of radiotherapy treatments. In the second part the challenges for dose measurement in the BT field are exposed. Finally, a phantom and a methodology to perform dosimetry audits in this field are presented.
