DESCRIPTION:CT imaging evolves faster than ever. After the advent of spira
l CT in the early nineties multislice\nCT scanners were introduced in 1998
. Today 64-slice scanners allow to cover a complete\nanatomical region wit
h in a few seconds with isotropic spatial resolution of below 0.5 mm. The\
ntechnology behind these devices is rather complex. CT detectors\, based o
n ceramic scintillators\,\nmust be able to read out large amounts of data
 within short times\; up to 600 MB/s data transfer\nrates are achieved. X-r
ay tubes must have the capability to withstand centrifugal forces of more\
nthan 20 g since rotation times are in the order of 0.3 s.\nAn even more i
mportant key technology is image reconstruction. It is rather easy to perf
orm reconstruction\nfor single or four-slice scanners but it becomes arbit
rarily difficult for cone-beam\nscanners since one runs into the so-called
  cone-beam problem. Today\, clinical cone-beam scanners\nare either equipp
ed with Feldkamp-type or with advanced single-slice rebinning (ASSR)-\ntyp
e algorithms. They must be capable of handling redundant data (arbitrary s
piral pitch) to ensure\nfull dose utilization. Further these algorithms mu
st be able to perform phase-correlated image\nreconstruction for imaging t
he heart.\nThe increase in spatial resolution leads to a potential increas
e in patient dose. Important measures\nto compensate that effect are dose
modulation techniques\, automatic exposure control and adaptive\nfiltering
algorithms.\nThis lecture gives an overview of CT technology\, CT image r
econstruction algorithms and the\ninterdependence of CT image quality and
dose. Important parameters are introduced and underlying\nrelations are di
 scussed.\n\nhttps://indico.ific.uv.es/event/800/
