Description

The IRIS group has developed a Compton camera prototype for medical imaging. The system detectors are made of Lanthanum (III) bromide scintillator crystals coupled to silicon photomultipliers. Originally, the system was conceived for hadron therapy treatment monitoring, although it is also focusing on medical radiotracer imaging. Tests at proton therapy centers and a hospital have shown the potential of the prototype, so experimental improvements are being carried out to improve its performance.

This seminar will discuss the basics of hadron therapy and the physics behind the Compton cameras. The prototype MACACO will be presented in detail, along with the results obtained in proton beams and with radiopharmaceuticals, to finally discuss its feasibility for medical applications.
