DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Angel Perea Martinez (IEM/CSIC)\nIn the framework of
FAIR/R3B for the construction of the CALIFA spectrometer end cap\nThere i
s a need of high dynamic range and calorimetric detection of both protons\
nand gamma rays. This cannot be easily achieved with standard scintillator
s\, so it is\na field for novel solutions and materials.\n\nOur proposal o
f a phoswich LaBr/LaCl configuration is attractive because of the high sto
pping\npower and high light yield of these materials\, along with the fact
of being optically compatible\n(i.e the latter being transparent to the s
cintillation light of the first one). This relaxes the\nneed for completel
y stopping the particle to get its energy. In a phoswich configuration (2\
ndifferent crystals shinning on a single PM)\, the different decay times o
f both scintillators\nproduce changes in the shape of the light signal.\n\
nFPGA online processing running simple algorithms make possible to reduce
this large\nstream of data in real time to a small set of parameters\, inc
luding the energy and nature of\nthe particle.\n\nThe compact detector thu
s created allows very portable solutions to be deployed in a variety of\ns
ituations: homeland security scenarios\, imported goods screening or envi
 romental\nnatural radiation studies\, among others.\n\nOur current prototy
pe is an arrangement of 4 phoswich xtals (2x2cm\, 6+4cm LaBr+LaCl) sampled
  at\n5 Gigasamples/sec 14bit 34 channels ADC (CAEN 1742). We present the r
esults of the last\nprotype test done in Krakow as of March 15th 2013.\n\n
