DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Angel Perea Martinez (IEM/CSIC)\nThe use of increasi
ngly segmented silicon detectors in nuclear reaction experiments poses cha
llenging\nconstraints on the design of the experimental chambers\, as seve
ral detectors and related pieces\nshould be placed in a extremely reduced
space\, attending to the experimental positions required by\nthe physics o
f the experiment. At the same time\, a large number of signals (usually in
excess of 100)\nmust be routed out of the chamber to the preamplifiers si
tting outside.\n\nTraditionally this has been done with coaxial feedthroug
hs\, but they introduce several problems of\ntheir own: sealing o-rings ar
e prone to leaks and the solderings usually get brittle after several\nuse
s\, leading to shortcuts or missing channels. Besides\, placement of the d
etectors is also\ncompromised as the bulky of 32+ pole cables (plus jacket
) put unwanted stresses on them. Achieving\nthe required position precisio
n for the detectors is sometimes also hard. \n\nWe present several related
solutions to those problems using Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) both for\
nplacement and feedthrough. Use of multilayered PCBs allows for large impr
ovement in feedthrough\ndensity (taken as number of signals fed-through pe
r unit area)\, usually several times the achieved\nwith the standard coaxi
al feedthroughs\, at a fraction of the cost. In an alternative design\, th
e use\nof PCBs all the way to the preamp\, minimizes both the cable use an
d the number of connectors\,\nrestricting them only to the inner part of t
he chamber\, where they are effectively isolated from\nRF noise. Signals c
ome out shielded by ground planes all the way to the preamp.\n\nPlacement
is also efectively achieved by plugging the detectors directly on a card.
Using a two cards\nstack arrangement\, different setups can be achieved by
switching cards without altering the preamp\nlayout and calibrations.\n\n
We've succesfully tested a chamber design for 11Be experiment at TRIUMF (C
anada)\, and developed a\nsecond chamber for an incoming experiment at Jyv
askyla (Finland). Both designs are presented in\nthe current talk.\n\nhttp
