Forward Brillouin scattering is an acousto-optic phenomenon that accounts for the interaction of transverse acoustic resonances with optical waves. In optical fibers, the acoustic resonances behind this phenomenon are radial and torsional-radial modes that can be easily excited in the range of 30 MHz to 1 GHz through optical electrostriction.
During the last decade there has been a growing interest in the development of applications based on this interaction such as fiber sensing and fiber characterization. In this talk we will briefly review the basic concepts of this acousto-optic interaction as well as the some of its applications.
