DESCRIPTION:Schedule: Four sessions of 2 hours each on April 11\,12\, and
13 from 11:00 to 13:00 plus one more lecture on Tuesday 12 in the afterno
on. \n\nLecturer: Jose Beltrán Jiménez (U. Salamanca\, Spain). \n\n \
n\nThe goal of the course will be to give an elementary and practical intr
oduction to the Mathematica package xAct (http://www.xact.es/). The philos
ophy of the lectures will be to get familiarised with some capabilities of
the packages by working out explicit problems. Some basic notions of Math
ematica would be desirable. Basics of field theory\, gravitation\, cosmolo
gy and black holes physics will also be helpful\, but not strictly necessa
ry. As a matter of fact\, the proposed problems aim at providing some basi
cs of cosmological perturbations\, gravitational waves oscillations and bl
ack hole perturbations physics.\n\n \n\nLecture I (2 hours): First steps
with xAct\n\nI.1.- Installation\, general philosophy of the package and su
rvey of the different capabilities.\n\nI.2.- Defining manifolds\, metrics\
, connections and tensors.\n\nI.3.- Proving some Bianchi identities.\n\nI.
4.- Some applications in field theory: Computing field equations and the e
nergy-momentum tensor.\n\n \n\nLecture II (2 hours): Application to cosmo
logical perturbations.\n\nII.1.- Working with charts.\n\nII.2.- Gauge tran
sformations.\n\nII.3.- Weinberg theorem: Conservation of adiabatic modes.\
n\n \n\nLecture III (2 hours): Application to oscillations of gravitation
al waves.\n\nIII.1 Inequivalent realisations of the cosmological principle
. Working with two manifolds.\n\nIII.2 Isotropic solutions with SU(2) cosm
ological fields.\n\nIII.3. Two tensor modes: Oscillations of gravitational
waves.\n\n \n\nLecture IV (2 hours): Applications to black holes.\n\nIV.
1. Spherically symmetric solutions.\n\nIV.2. Perturbations of black holes.
