We review some existing puzzles about the quantum sub-structure of black holes and the mechanisms by which they process information. We present some new approaches for understanding these mechanisms and discuss their observational consequences for astrophysics, accelerator experiments and for implementing black hole type information processing in table top laboratory experiments.
