DESCRIPTION:A recent proposal by Burgess\, Ibanez and Quevedo sets the str
 ing scale at an intermediate scale of approximately 10^11 GeV. This can ex
 plain the weak-Planck scale hierarchy without unnaturally small dimensionl
 ess numbers or large hierarchies in fundamental dimensionful scales. In th
 is talk we review new phenomenological aspects and constraints from loweri
 ng the string unification scale to 10^11 GeV\, such as Yukawa unification\
 , spectra\, radiative electroweak symmetry breaking and charge and colour
