DESCRIPTION:A brief historical overview is given on tracking at hadron col
 liders. The performance and physics potential of past and present accelera
 tor facilities are compared with LHC expectations. The concept of charged 
 particle (precision) tracking and vertex detection in Atlas is discussed. 
 It is argued that precision tracking at the high luminosity phase of the L
 HC\, requires innovative new technologies. Those will only be accessible f
 or the HEP community when inter-disciplinary collaborations with other sci
