DESCRIPTION:We show how to develop a non-perturbative method to compute eq
ual-time VEVs. This is based on assuming a local expansion for the vacuum
wave functional (VWF)\, which can be shown to hold if the theory has a mas
s gap. But\, to compute a VEV\, we still need to perform a path integral (
we are in the Scroedinger representation) which would be (at first sight)
divergent. Analyticity properties of the VWF on the cutoff allows us to re
move it from the VEVs (both\, for the case of the scalar theory in 1+1 dim
. and for the Yang-Mills theory in 2+1) getting finite results for them wh
en we use the local VWF (which we assume that it is known from another met
hod\, f.e. lattice). When this method is applied to the VEV of a large (sp
atial) Wilson loop\, this gives to first order an area law for them.\n\nht
